SEO Basics - Especially For Newbies
Written by PLRMan on August 11, 2009 – 2:35 pm -Take it from a guy that has literally spent countless hours, & countless dollars buying & devouring over inflated & often useless courses of learning SEO, that SEO is actually not rocket science, in fact it’s far from it.
Below are my tried & proven tactics that instituted faithfully, will account for over 90% of the effectiveness of successful SEO implementation, yet many “gurus” will have you wading through countless other tweaks that will improve your traffic by 10% at most.
By all means spend a little time reading SEO forums for additional advice, but don’t overdo it, forums can be a horrible time waster. Spend your time doing some Google seaches for SEO tuition & you’ll be amazed at what you can find
SEO, as you’ll see, is really pretty elementary, don't let it scare you.
Think about it for a minute, search engines are just that, engines, a man made machine that operates on a defined set of rules; there’s no emotions, no people involvement. Feed them the information they desire, & the engine will reward you.
Getting decent search engine ranking is really just executing on the points below.
SEO can be broken up into 2 categories – on‐page and off page optimization. We’ll address On Page Optimization in this article.
ON PAGE OPTIMIZATION
- The title of the page MUST contain your main keywords … keep it short and appealing.
- The description should also contain your main keywords – but don’t overdo it, one instance of your main keyword & you’ll be fine. The description should also say, succinctly, what your website is offering.
- ‘Sell’ your site, remember this is what people are going to see in the SERPS. Never include words like buy, cheap or other or other obvious sales type expressions.
- Forget the other meta tags ‐ they’re useless. Really, for the extra bang you get, they’re a waste of time.
Now for the Content of your page:
By all means make use of headers; use h1 tags (title of the page) and insert your keywords there.
Use h2, h3, h4 if at all possible, this is where you can put your secondary, or low hanging fruit keywords here.
Always, always use your primary keywords at the beginning and again at the end end of your page’s text.
Don’t hurry on your text, remember people are reading this, so make it worthwhile. It should contain your main keywords a time or two, then sprinkle in your secondary keywords here and there.
Definitely use alt tags on all images you have on the page, but don’t stuff too many keywords in. Just Remember that alt tags were designed to describe the image, not to fool the search engines!
SITE STRUCTURE
- Use plain html to link to other pages within the site and forget fancy java or flash menus
- Utilize your primary keywords as anchor text & link to other pages on your site.
- Don’t use the keyword “Home” to link to your main page; instead just use one of your keywords. It’s pretty silly trying to rank for the word 'home'
- Keep links short and visible.
- Use the nofollow attribute to link to pages that have nothing to contribute to the site (contact us, about us page, etc).
That’s it. Really!
Follow these simple steps & you’ll be well on the way to decent SEO rankings at the same time learning SEO.
